I've just completed and uploaded Chapter 8 of 'Ramblings' and have three more to write over the next couple of weeks, before the last stretch of the dyke path in mid-September. I will be sorry when this project is concluded - but then I think, hold on, one thing that is emerging from it is the basis for a whole programme of new compositions. Surveying and journeying through all the musical topics involved gives a real sense of what possibilities like ahead. I suppose that is one point of making a journey or pilgrimage, namely that you take the experience with you thereafter.
Current Ramblings About Music now getting close to perhaps the most interesting aspect of this work, namely the way that the brain responds to music. Looking at the borderline between the art and science of music is proving to be a really rewarding exercise. The Offa's Dyke walks are great, too. Welshpool to Llangollen just completed; last stretch up to Prestatyn will be mid-September.
This may well prove to have been the hottest weekend. Some of the walking was hilly demanding substantial effort even though these weren't the longest sections along the dyke. As always, the scenery was beautiful and exceptionally varied. The pic here is probably the best I've taken of the dyke itself. We're now into the nitty gritty of the book, involving acoustics, mythology of music and the musical cosmos. It's becoming headier but the experience is even more rewarding.
